Sharpsburg Horse Rescue

December 2, 2006-present

In December 2006 the Humane Society of Washington County began what is believed to be the largest horse rescue in the state of Maryland. At that time 74 horses were seized and later removed from a 35 acre farm in Sharpsburg, MD. At the helm was HSWC Executive Director Paul Miller, accompanied by members of the HSWC staff, local veterinarians and representatives from Days End Farm Horse Rescue and the Humane Society of the United States.

This portion of the website is dedicated to the 5 horses that lost their lives during the rescue and for the over 70 horses that survived. The attached press releases will allow you to follow the progression of the Sharpsburg Horse Rescue from the first day until the present.

The rescue has now become a full scale adoption effort, with a number of horses still needing to find their permanent homes. Executive Director Paul Miller, the Board of Directors and the staff and volunteers of the Humane Society of Washington County are dedicated to overseeing the welfare of these horses and they will continue to provide for the daily, rehabilitative and medical needs of the horses until each have found permanent homes.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the ongoing rehabilitation/adoption campaign may send financial contributions to the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Credit card donations are being accepted at the attached link.

Horses born after the rescue:

Sharpsburg Hay Angels
In December 2006, just after the Sharpsburg Horse Rescue began the Humane Society of Washington County put out a request for much needed hay for the over 70 horses in our care. We quickly received a phone call from Ms. Joanna Kelly and Ms. Maureen Haley, both of the Monkton, MD area, offering to bring much needed square bales. Without hesitation both women drove an hour and a half to the farm in Sharpsburg, MD to bring and unload over 100 bales of hay.

This very generous gesture blossomed into a large scale hay caravan effort when Ms. Fran Burns, also of Monkton, MD, joined Maureen and Joanna in their efforts to obtain more hay for the horses. In the following months the three women, coined Hay Angels by WJZ TV, the local Baltimore CBS affiliate, collected and delivered over 2,000 bales of hay to the farm in Sharpsburg, MD. Enlisting a number of local residents from Monkton, Fran, Maureen, Joanna and more than 20 additional hay angels delivered the hay from outside of Baltimore drove the hay to the farm in Sharpsburg in February and March of 2007.

Ms. Lauren Otto of Frederick County, MD also helped in our effort to locate and transport hay when she learned of the hay caravan. Joining the caravans as they passed through Frederick County, Lauren brought her pick up full of hay to the farm on both occasions.

We must not overlook our own local Hay Angels who assisted in the unloading and stacking of the hay. We have listed the hay angels from the Baltimore area and locally. Many hay angels are not listed, as they anonymously donated food and various horse items for the rescued horses. Their caring and help was invaluable during the rescue and rehabilitation.
